How to Reverse Video Search - Discovering Video Origins

Technology is one of those fantastic areas of life that provides significant benefits and great frustrations to all of us. As we’ve seen many times over the last several years, technology has the ability to make our lives much easier and less chaotic; however, it can sometimes add to the chaos. From shutting down whole airports to causing massive internet and cellular service outages, technology has repeatedly shown that it is prone to flaws and glitches, just like everything else.

While technology can cause issues, it can still be instrumental in daily life. The best way to get the most out of technology is to know how to use it to benefit many people. This is an especially crucial skill for marketers and content creators–those who have to keep pace with the changing trends in advertising to get helpful products to those who need them. Sometimes, this takes a lot of in-depth learning and trial and error; other times, it’s as simple as tapping a few keys to trace the origin of a video.

What Is Reverse Video Searching?

One of the fastest ways to add a little personality to your content is to use images and videos. Yes, the words in your content are equally important, but creating a healthy balance between text and visuals can grab people’s attention–and keep them focused on the point your content is trying to make.

What if you don’t have the chance to create this content yourself? In these cases, you might need to turn to stock footage to get the shot you’re looking for.  However, it’s a good idea to check the source of these videos before using them in your content.

Why Do You Need To Know How To Reverse Video Search?

Why is it important to check a video’s source? You want to make sure you won’t get involved in any unwanted copyright issues. Some sites will take footage without the original creator's permission and try to sell it as their own. If you end up with some of that visual content on your website or social media, you could get sucked into a case of copyright infringement.

Fortunately, you can easily avoid copyright problems if you choose a reputable source for your stock footage and do a quick reverse video search to make sure it’s reliable–and won’t lead to any legal issues.

How Do You Search For A Video’s Source?

The quickest and easiest way to search for a video’s source is to use a screenshot. If you’ve done a screenshot on a computer before, you know it’s as simple as hitting a few keys. If you haven’t ever used this feature on your computer, don’t worry–we’ll walk you through it!

How you take a screenshot will depend on your computer’s operating system. Below are the steps for both Windows and Mac.

  • Windows: Press the PrtSc key (above the backspace key). If this doesn’t work, try holding down the Windows logo key first and then adding the PrtSc key. This should turn your mouse cursor into something that resembles crosshairs (+) in shape. Next, just click your mouse, keep it pressed, and highlight the section of the screen you want to capture before releasing the mouse to take the shot.
  • Mac: Press Shift+Command+3 to capture an image of your entire screen. To take a shot of a portion of your screen, press Shift+Command+4. This is similar to the Windows tool and allows you to use your mouse to target a section of the screen. Click your mouse and release it once you have highlighted the area you want to capture.

Your screenshot will appear in the lower right-hand corner of your screen. You can click on it to share it or find it later in your photos/screenshots folder or on your desktop.

Next, take your image to Google, tap the camera icon on the far right of the search bar, and upload the file. In seconds, you can verify the video’s origin and be sure you’re getting a legitimate source of stock footage.
